    I was born in 1945. My grandfather worked in building the lighthouse. My father, Claude was the winch driver that pulled the whales from the water to the flat top, to be carted to the station 1 K away
    A reef off the coast of the Bay is named after my brother Neville.
    I spent many hours in the 50’s watching the butter churns at norco under Theo Gray, the chief butter maker. Also watching cattle being slaughted at A W Andersons, with Mr Phelps being the slaughterman.
    I also watched the crains sink to the ocean floor at the jerttys end during 1954 cyclone at around 5am on that unforgetable day

    I remember the meat works in 1954 when I was just a kid, and my parents and I were on a camping trip. The smell was dreadful, and we carried flies in the car for hours later. The beautiful light house with its crystal light, which was hand lit at that time, more than made up for the smell. It was so beautiful.
    Some of my ancestors had a coachbuilding business in Byron in 1902
